Superb stain, heat, and scratch resistance helped enameled cast iron and enameled steel top our scores. Stainless steel also withstood our mishaps. But even vitreous china is a fine choice for most bathrooms, especially where shattering from dropped objects is less of a factor. While acrylic is a good low-priced option, solid surfacing can cost as much as tougher materials.

The Ratings include our judgments of materials only, since we found no significant performance differences among brands and models of the same material. Prices are based on a typical 16- to 18-inch oval; expect to pay more for larger sizes and unusual shapes and colors.
